Thanks for visiting me, Mr. Conversation…

I organize English conversation classes for those wishing to expand and maintain their knowledge of English.

Learning a new language is difficult and the English language is no exception to the rule. So what do you do after spending years studying, mastering your skills in a second language? How do you use your English know how? You can try to speak to your family, friends and colleagues in English, but they prefer to speak in Czech. What about when you travel abroad, that’s a great opportunity to speak the language? True, it is great, but sadly it only lasts as long as your budget does. You could go back to an English school and take another course? Yes, but they’re expensive and only repeat what I already know. So what do you do?

The solution is simple…you need to spend time with people who want to speak in English with you. Ideally this should include, someone willing to correct you when you mispronounce a word or offer you advice on the English language. Where could you go to find people like this in a nice relaxed atmosphere?

Join me, a native English speaker and six other new “friends” and spend your afternoon speaking and expanding your skills in English. Our sessions are structured, though in a less formal way, so that you can interact freely with everyone. Come along, be positive and be prepared to talk!

How to learn English and other foreign languages

English lessons are great with Mr. Conversation.

1) Spend the time!

By far the most important factor is how much time you are immersed in the language. The more time you spend with the language, the faster you will learn. This means listening, reading, writing, speaking, and studying words and phrases. This does not mean sitting in class looking out the window, nor listening to other students who do not speak well, nor getting explanations in your own language about how the language works. This means spending time enjoyably connected to the language you are learning.

2) Listen and read every day!

Listen wherever you are on your MP3 player. Read what you are listening to. Listen to and read things that you like, things that you can mostly understand, or even partly understand. If you keep listening and reading you will get used to the language. One hour of listening or reading is more effective than many hours of class time.

Why making small talk matters

Small talk is often seen as meaningless conversation motivated by social politeness: It lacks meaning and value, but you do it because that’s the proper thing. Well, I couldn’t disagree more with this idea.

In my definition, small talk is conversation on safe and somewhat superficial subjects (the weather, the news, the hottest movies or the latest fashion), but it is not meaningless conversation.

Personally, I’ve learned to stay away from meaningless conversation. If I don’t enjoy it and don’t find value in it, I do one of two things: I change the subject or I politely leave. Other than the topic, there is nothing small about small talk and this is why knowing how to make small talk matters as a people skill.

Before anything else, you need to realize that if you struggle with making small talk, it’s to a large extent a confidence issue. People who are confident in social interactions are naturally able to make small talk and connect with others. This in turn will improve you English language skills greatly!

How to start a conversation with a stranger

1. Start with a greeting.
For most people, breaking the ice is the hardest part in starting a conversation with someone you don’t know, but after the ice is broken, everything else should come easier.

To start, make eye contact, smile, and make a greeting, such as, “Hi, how are you?”

2. Introduce yourself and find out the strangers name.
You: I’m Teresa, what’s your name?

Sometimes knowing what to say to someone can be difficult, here are a few tips to get you started:

Weather – In any culture, talking about the weather is a great way to pass the time, to get to know someone, and to make polite conversation. Even though talking about the weather has become synonymous with making idle chit chat, theirs certainly nothing wrong with walking up to someone and saying “isn’t it a nice day today”. Other examples: “beautiful weather we’re having” or “Is it supposed to rain tomorrow?”
